National Vietnam War Veterans Day

Dear Comrades,

Today, March 29, the nation recognizes National Vietnam War Veterans Day.  On March 29, 1973, the United States Military Assistance Command in Vietnam was decommissioned, and it was the day that the last U.S. combat soldiers departed Vietnam. Only U.S. embassy personnel and support staff remained in South Vietnam until the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.

We acknowledge the sacrifices made by our brave soldiers, their families, and the communities that supported them.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to the POW-MIA Gold Star families, who lost their loved ones or still endure the uncertainty of their fate during the war.

We must never forget the sacrifices of these families, and we must do everything in our power to continue searching and to bring closure to those who still wait for their loved ones to return. Why keep searching? Because you never leave a fallen American behind.

To the veterans of the Vietnam War, we offer a long-overdue “welcome home”. Your service and sacrifice deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. We honor your courage and commitment to our country, and we thank you for your unwavering dedication to defending our freedom.

In honor of those who have served in Vietnam, The DAV Omaha Beach Chapter #7 on 29 March @ 1930 will take a moment and ask the Vietnam War veterans present to stand and be recognized. If you cannot make it then and have a U.S. flag, fly it proudly to acknowledge the service and sacrifices made by Vietnam War veterans. If you know a Vietnam War veteran, give them a call – or better yet, go visit them.
